Jogging With Support

Like most running gear, all over the world, it cuts across the sexual category with only slight variations like the shoes, shorts, tops, caps - one necessary running item that is strictly ladies only are the bras.

For bras and running, it seems the further functional the better. Simply picking out something out from your drawer isn't going to cut it also, even though a survey of women in the UK found that there are 73 percent of those who exercise on a regular basis do not wear a sports bra.

You might ask why a sports-specific bra is important. It is for the reason that the delicate connective tissue contained by the breast known as the Cooper's ligament can be strained and stretched by movement, which in turn can set in motion irreversible breast sagging.

Studies conducted by the University of Portsmouth for Shock Absorber, sports bra maker, by means of a "bounce-o-meter" no less, found even women with an A cup averaged 4cm of movement when running with no bra. Possibly as you would have thought, by the time you got up to a G cup that measurement was 14cm.

The study only measured the sponsor’s product but it did show a sports bra cut movement by around 60 per cent not considering bra size.

Owner of Newmarket lingerie store Avokado, Claire Long, has provided some tips on acquiring this essential bit of kit. Her store is specializing in bras for the bigger busted and stocks a range of sports bras running from a D cup up to an HH cup. So, her recommendation on sports bras is pertinent for women of any breast size.

Long is also just getting back into running. She ran as a teen but stopped when a big bust and ill-fitting bras made for an uncomfortable mix.

Long said that runners need a bra that lessens movement and stretching of the breast tissue, but most significantly of all, comfortable.

She says some people want to look good but it's really all about functionality. Even if every woman will go well with a different bra it is vital to get fitted properly.
